LG Display develops world's first Quad HD display for smartphones

The world's first Quad HD smartphone display is here, if one were to believe this latest announcement by LG Display.

In its official release, the company claims that this new 5.5-inch Quad HD AH-IPS LCD smartphone display boasts a resolution of a whopping 2560 x 1440 pixels, and adds that it also features the highest pixel density on a mobile device, at 538 ppi. The Quad HD display’s thinness measures at a mere 1.21 mm and it features a 1.2 mm bezel measured in LCD modules (LCM); LG Display claims that this new Quad HD panel is both the world's slimmest and narrowest panel.

The company claims that this Quad HD display, in contrast to the Full HD variant currently available in the market, realises clearer images with 4 times more pixels, thereby enabling it to bring out more delicate colours, while also improving contrast and vividness. This new display will also treat users to a full view of PC-version web pages at a single glance minus any image distortion - Full HD displays realise only 3/4th of a full screen.

Dr. Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Display's IT and Mobile Development Group, said: "LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world's first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology. With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market."

It is based on Low Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) substrate and the panel also realises superior brightness of 430nit with improved transmittance and larger aperture opening size.
